Although I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, I have a strong connection to Red Hook. I have been a resident of the Red Hook community for 20 years. My husband, Steven Appenzeller, and I moved here when our children, who are now adults, were four years old. They received a wonderful education attending Red Hook schools.
Initially I was interested in a business career. After attending business school at MIT, I joined Chemical Bank in New York City. Over my 20-year career, the bank merged several times. By the time I left the institution, it had been renamed JP Morgan Chase. Most of my banking career was focused upon providing cash management services to corporations. When we moved to Red Hook, I was determined to start a new career in education. I’d always wanted to teach mathematics. Luckily, living near Bard College facilitated my quest to obtain a Masters of Arts in Teaching. I’ve been a secondary school mathematics teacher for nearly 20 years, spending most of my teaching career at Linden Avenue Middle School in Red Hook.
In addition to my connection to the Red Hook school district, I have been a trustee of the Red Hook Library and have been a board member of NDAC, the Northern Dutchess Aquatic Club. I have also volunteered at Peoples Place in Kingston.
Since moving to Red Hook, my husband and I have enjoyed attending Historic Red Hook events over the years. We’ve relished learning about the history of the town and appreciate the importance of cherishing historical artifacts. The older I get, the more I appreciate the importance of using historical facts to make informed decisions about the future. I love reading historical fiction and would love to have HRH sponsor a historical fiction book group sometime in the future.
