Join us for this free presentation from Dr. Thomas Summerhill. His book, Harvest of Dissent: Agrarianism in Nineteenth-Century New York, explores farmers’ creative and radical organization, such as the Anti-Rent and Grange movements, in the face of the social, political, and economic transformations of the nineteenth century.
Thomas Summerhill is Associate Professor of History at Michigan State University. He earned his PhD at the University of California, San Diego. He is currently working on a book on political dissent in the Civil War North. His publications include Harvest of Dissent: Agrarianism in Nineteenth-Century New York and, with James C. Scott, Transatlantic Rebels: Agrarianism in Comparative Context. He has held fellowships at the Yale University Program in Agrarian Studies and the Smithsonian Institution. His historic preservation work has included funded research for the Michigan Department of Transportation and as a consultant for The Farmer’s Museum in Cooperstown, NY, and the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, NY. He is former Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs in the College of Social Science at Michigan State University.
