Steps Toward Sustainability

In June, the Village of Red Hook Public Spaces Initiative contributed this beautiful pollinator garden to the Elmendorph Green.

This year, Historic Red Hook joined other local organizations in creating and signing a sustainability pledge to guide our future practices.  This commitment is a component of Red Hook Together's mission to attain the designation of a Certified Audubon Sustainable Community for the Town of Red Hook.

Our Sustainability Challenge: Opportunities for Commitment

Whereas, the Town of Red Hook has endorsed Red Hook Together’s subcommittee in their work in achieving Audubon International’s certification in their Sustainable Communities Program (SCP); and

Whereas, the SCP will empower the Red Hook Community to protect our natural, social & economic systems while sustaining our land, water, and wildlife; and

Whereas, Historic Red Hook seeks to promote our community’s unfolding story by connecting its past to its present and future; and

Whereas, HRH plays a central role in promoting a mindful community;

Therefore, The Director and Board of Trustees of Historic Red Hook do hereby embrace Red Hook Together’s Audubon subcommittee and its work. We pledge to work to:

  • Increase our promotion of the sustainable benefits of understanding our past, present and future;

  • Participate in community days such as Hardscrabble Day, and organize community events including the Then and Now Festival and the Cemetery Crawl;

  • Support the Town/Village as they work towards modifying our transportation model with emphases on walkability, low carbon emissions and public safety;

  • Continue supporting our farmers and local merchants and neighbors, seeking new ways to do so;

  • Work towards greener purchasing, repurposing, and recycling, with the goal of more efficient use of our resources;

  • Publicly celebrate the shared history and progress of our community; and

  • Keep energy efficiency and accessibility in mind when planning for building maintenance and renovations;

Thus furthering the certification process that the Town of Red Hook has undertaken.
