Historic Marker Dedication

  • Historic Red Hook 7562 N Broadway Red Hook United States (map)

This sign dedication will take place on Saturday, October 9th at 3pm at the Methodist Church Cemetery on Cherry Street in Red Hook.

This sign, made possible by a grant from William G. Pomeroy Foundation, will mark the grave and acknowledge the lifetime achievements of Alexander Gilson, the notable African-American head gardener of Montgomery Place in the 19th century. Initial research on Gilson began in 2019 as part of Gilsonfest, a project in collaboration with Bard College that included an exhibition on Gilson in Historic Red Hook’s StoryStudio. See Bard's digital exhibit here.

You can find parking behind the Elmendorph Inn at 7562 N. Broadway, Red Hook and the cemetery is in walking distance (find directions here).

After the dedication, join us on the Elmendorph Green for local, fall treats and a concert from bluegrass band Grass Fed. We will be kicking off our month-long Cemetery Crawl, for which you can find information at www.historicredhook.org/cemeterycrawl
